Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has rolled out a memory feature for its chatbot, Grok, allowing it to remember details from past conversations and provide more personalised responses. The update brings Grok closer to competitors like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, which have long offered similar capabilities.
How Grok’s memory feature works
The new feature enables Grok to retain user preferences, making recommendations and responses more tailored over time. Users can view exactly what Grok remembers and choose to delete specific memories through the chatbot’s interface. The feature is currently available in beta on Grok.com and the Grok iOS and Android apps, but is not yet accessible in the EU or UK.
xAI has emphasised transparency in memory management, allowing users to toggle the feature off via the Data Controls page in settings. Individual memories can also be deleted directly from the chat interface.

Do you think Grok's memory feature will enhance user experience?
With this update, Grok is catching up to rivals like ChatGPT, which recently upgraded its memory to reference entire chat histories, and Google’s Gemini, which offers persistent memory for personalised interactions. The addition of memory functionality signals xAI’s push to make Grok a long-term AI assistant rather than just a conversational chatbot.
