Zomato's founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal has shared the intriguing story behind his company's iconic name. The food delivery giant, which began its journey as a restaurant discovery platform, wasn't initially meant to be called Zomato at all.
Recently, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal appeared on the popular comedy show The Great Indian Kapil Show along with his wife Grecia Munoz. During the episode, Kapil asked Goyal the story behind the unique name of his company. “We have heard potato, tomato, but what is the meaning of Zomato?”, asked Kapil.
“I saw an ad where cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth argue, saying it’s ‘Zomato’ or ‘Zomaato’. So, what’s the real story? Where did the name come from?”, added Kapil.
Goyal revealed that initially he wanted to name the company as tomato. “This, ‘tomato’ or ‘tomaato’, whatever you want to say - we wanted that name as the dot com. We wanted 'tomato dot com,' but we didn't get that domain,” said Goyal.
In a failed attempt to get the desired domain name Goyal revealed that he changed one letter in the name and that is how tomato became Zomato and the company got the domain name — Zomato.com.
Apart from this, Goyal also shared his love story with his wife Grecia Munoz on the show. Kapil asked the couple about their love story and how Goyal met Munoz.
