Amazon India is reportedly accelerating its plans to enter the burgeoning quick commerce market in India. According to a report in Economic Times, Amazon India is racing to launch its quick commerce delivery service, codenamed Tez, by late December or early next year as it looks to join the booming sector. Codenamed "Tez," the service is slated to launch by late December or early next year. This aggressive timeline marks a significant shift from the earlier projected launch in the first quarter of 2025. The company is expected to start the service with groceries and daily essentials.
Getting ready in action mode
By entering the quick commerce space, Amazon aims to compete with established players like Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy Instamart nd Tata Group-owned BigBasket which collectively generated approximately $5.5-6 billion in gross sales this month. Analysts view this move as crucial for Amazon to maintain its position as a leading e-commerce player in India. A person with knowledge of the matter told ET, “They (Amazon) want to launch it sooner than the end of first quarter in India. Quick commerce is where all the action is if you are a meaningful consumer internet platform. They are also following the same model as others—setting up dark stores, figuring out the details of stock-keeping units (SKUs) and categories, and putting logistics infrastructure in place.”
The upcoming monthly review in early December will be a key milestone in finalizing the launch strategy for Tez. Amazon is actively hiring talent and investing in infrastructure to support this high-priority initiative. The company is also exploring optimal inventory management and logistics solutions to ensure efficient delivery of groceries and daily essentials.
According to people briefed on the plans, the matter will be discussed in the next monthly review slated for the first week of December—ahead of its annual Smbhav event.
While the final name for the service is yet to be determined, the impending launch signals Amazon's commitment to capturing a significant share of the rapidly growing quick commerce market in India.
