A former tech engineer from Bengaluru has become a poignant example of the destructive power of alcohol addiction. Once employed at a leading tech consulting firm, the man was recently discovered begging on the streets of the city, his heartbreaking story shared in viral videos by Instagram user @sharath_yuvaraja_official.
In these videos, the man recounts his downfall, attributing his descent into alcoholism to the loss of his parents, which ultimately led him to a life of begging. His incoherent thoughts on philosophy and life have drawn significant attention, raising awareness about addiction and mental health challenges.
Bengaluru techie, struggling with alcoholism and tragic loss, found begging on the streets
In the first video, the man, wearing a disheveled red T-shirt, revealed that he had worked at Global Village Tech Park (now known as Sattva Global City) near Mysuru Road. He explained that his descent into addiction began after the tragic loss of both his parents, which left him emotionally and mentally shattered. The grief triggered a heavy drinking habit that, over time, spiraled out of control, leading to his life as a beggar.
The subsequent videos reveal the man in a disoriented state, speaking incoherently about various topics such as meditation, David Hume’s philosophy, Albert Einstein’s theories, and even brain regions like the hippocampus and amygdala.
In one of the clips, he reflects on his life choices, stating, “Religion, caste, all those things… look at what I’ve become. I need to read more, I need to read more.” In another video, he mentioned a trip to Frankfurt in 2013, indicating that his life had once held more promise, only to be derailed by addiction.
Social media outpouring and attempts at help
The videos have gone viral, shedding light on the severity of addiction and its impact on mental health. Sharath, the Instagram user who posted the videos, provided updates on the man’s situation, mentioning attempts to seek help from local NGOs. However, a follow-up video revealed that no NGO would offer assistance without police involvement, further complicating the possibility of offering support.
Recently, in an Instagram story, Sharath shared, “We’ve been searching for him every day around the Jayanagar area, but we haven’t been able to locate him. On Monday, we plan to meet with the Bengaluru city commissioner and Jayanagar police to seek their assistance in finding him. Our first priority is to trace him, and we remain hopeful.”
