Intel's 13th and 14th gen CPU issues: No fix for damaged processors
Intel has confirmed that there is no fix for already damaged 13th and 14th Generation desktop CPUs experiencing instability issues. The company plans to release a microcode patch in mid-August to address the root cause of the problem, but any degradation that has already occurred is irreversible.
The issue, which can affect any 13th or 14th Gen desktop processor consuming 65W or more power, is primarily caused by exposure to elevated voltages.
Additionally, some instability reports have been traced back to an oxidization manufacturing issue that was fixed last year.
Intel spokesperson stated to the Verge that the company is not issuing a recall or halting sales of the affected processors. Instead, they are advising customers experiencing instability to contact Intel Customer Support for assistance. The company is also investigating options to easily identify affected or at-risk processors on end-user systems.
For users who have not yet experienced issues, Intel is confident that the upcoming microcode patch will be an effective preventative solution. However, the company recommends that users adhere to Intel Default Settings on their desktop processors and ensure their BIOS is up to date.
Intel has not provided specific information on how many chips are likely to be irreversibly impacted or how warranty replacements will be handled. The company is committed to supporting customers in the exchange process but has not commented on extending warranties for the affected processors.
The issue does not appear to affect mobile laptop chips, although Intel is continuing its investigation to confirm this.
