Wayne Gretzky, the great hockey legend, has sued Veera Mahajan for malicious prosecution after the latter filed—and subsequently withdrew—a fraud action against him in 2022. The row is over "OMG," a weight-loss gum for which Mahajan invested, purportedly on the basis of Gretzky's testimony that he lost 35 pounds on the gum. But Mahajan subsequently accused Gretzky of making up the claim, which she claimed deceived investors and incurred losses. Although her case was dismissed, Gretzky has since sued her back, alleging that she filed a frivolous case in order to coerce him into settlement.

Who is Veera Mahajan?

Veera Mahajan is a diversified entrepreneur, author, and activist who works in the area of self-help, well-being, and entrepreneurship. She has achieved fame not only as an entrepreneur but also for being an advocate against domestic violence. Her book, Domestic Abuse, Unreported Crime: Why Men and Women Suffer in Silence, brings to light the plight of the victims of abuse and is intended to empower them to escape abusive relationships.
Apart from her activism, Veera Mahajan has also had other business interests, such as "OMG," the weight-reduction gum which is the focus of the ongoing court case. She first invested in the company as a backer after Gretzky and his wife, Janet, recommended the product. Her belief in the brand changed, though, when Gretzky reportedly admitted to making a false claim that he had used the gum to lose weight, prompting her to sue in 2022.

The "OMG" Lawsuit and Wayne Gretzky’s countersuit

Mahajan's suit against Gretzky charged him with defrauding investors with misrepresentations, which she claimed caused the company to become financially distressed. She subsequently dropped the suit, though it is unknown if a settlement was negotiated or if legal pressure compelled her action. Gretzky has subsequently countersued, claiming that Mahajan brought the suit in bad faith, in an attempt to coerce him into paying a substantial settlement. As per Gretzky, Mahajan sought to draw "millions to avert possible adverse publicity."
Although Mahajan no longer has her case, Gretzky remains embroiled in legal woes from Steven Sparks, the founder of "OMG," who has brought another lawsuit against him for similar claims of fraud.
