Seth Jones, a defenceman with an eight-year, $76 million contract, is in talks with the Chicago Blackhawks about a possible trade. Jones, who is in his third year of the contract, expressed interest in the possibility of a trade, but acknowledged that his contract may be challenging to fit into other teams.

Seth Jones and the Chicago Blackhawks may be considering a potential split

Seth Jones and the Chicago Blackhawks may be considering a potential split before the 2025 NHL trade deadline, as the defenseman and his agent have communicated with the Blackhawks' front office about a possible deadline deal.
Jones, 30, is the highest earner for the rebuilding Blackhawks, expected to earn $9.5 million per season through 2029-30. He was traded to Chicago in 2021, but the team's rebuilding trajectory continued the following season, with Jones remaining on the roster.

"We all know the whole story and what happened when I got here," Jones said. "I would like to give myself a chance to win in my career. I know that the money is not an easy thing to move, and that’s what we’re figuring out. ... If it happens, it happens. Obviously, while I’m here with the Blackhawks, they have my full effort, full attention to this team to try to get this team better."
“Winning games makes you feel better,” Jones said. “It makes the team feel better. It makes your organization feel better. You have fun coming to the rink every day. That’s what my goal is for this team, as long as I’m here. It could be two weeks. It could be five more years.”
Jones' $9.5 million salary is unlikely to be taken by many teams, unless significant retention on Chicago's side is achieved, making it challenging to negotiate a trade.

Jones is currently 26th in 38 games with a -12 plus/minus. The Blackhawks are in last place in the Central Division with 41 points and a -42 goal differential. With the playoffs out of reach, the team may consider a trade to acquire valuable pieces for rebuilding.
