Spencer Knight, a promising young goaltender, made his first appearance for the Chicago Blackhawks on March 3, 2025, in a game against the Los Angeles Kings. The Blackhawks acquired him from the Florida Panthers just two days earlier, on March 1, in a trade that sent veteran defenseman Seth Jones and a conditional 2026 first-round draft pick to Florida.

After unexpected trade,Spencer Knight ready to make an impact

Spencer Knight, a Connecticut native, was surprised by his recent trade from the Florida Panthers to the Chicago Blackhawks. The 23-year-old, who turns 24 on April 19, admitted he didn’t expect the move but quickly focused on adjusting to his new team.

"You talk to people close to you and you move on and you keep moving forward," Knight said before the matchup with L.A. "I'm lucky to come to a great organization and be in a great place that has really good groups of people, guys in the locker room, training staff, equipment staff, front office. So, I'm excited."
Knight said it was his decision to jump right in against the Kings. "I just want to play," he said with a grin. Knight is in the second year of a three-year, $13.5 million contract extension he signed with the Panthers in 2022, which carries a $4.5 million cap hit per season. Despite the trade, he remains under contract through the 2025-26 season.
Spencer Knight, drafted 13th overall by Florida in 2019, posted a 44-25-7 record with a 2.76 GAA and .906 save percentage in 80 games for the Panthers. He went from backing up Sergei Bobrovsky on the defending Stanley Cup champions to joining the struggling Blackhawks. Despite the change, Knight remains focused on bringing a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and a winning mindset to Chicago.

Knight learned from veteran goalie Sergei Bobrovsky while with Florida, admiring his balance between hard work and smart recovery. Now in Chicago, Knight joins a crowded goaltending group with Petr Mrazek and Arvid Soderblom, while Laurent Brossoit remains sidelined with a knee injury. With the trade deadline approaching, the Blackhawks may have to manage three goalies for the rest of the season, a challenge interim coach Anders Sorensen acknowledges will require careful rotation and communication.

Despite the transition to a struggling Blackhawks team, Spencer Knight remains focused on bringing a winning mindset and strong work ethic. With a crowded goalie situation, Chicago will need to carefully manage playing time, but Knight is determined to make an impact and help the team improve.
