The NHL offseason is one full of buzz as teams weigh massive decisions. The future of Buffalo Sabres d-man Bowen Byram, the possibility of Joel Quenneville returning behind the Anaheim Ducks bench, and even the Calgary Flames' plan to enhance the roster these past few months are among the biggest storylines. With respect to contracts, coaching changes, and their next big move with money, these upcoming months could seriously change the path of the franchises involved, sending ripples of excitement across the league.

Bowen Byram's contract and Joel Quenneville's coaching job

Byram's contract is running out, and he stated he wants to stay with the Buffalo Sabres, clearly indicating he wants to help them in the long run. Having backed that up with an admirable year of 31 assists and 38 points in the season, he proved to be one of the organization's key blue-liners. Restricted free agent status is now with Byram, and heavy raise scandals are on the oncoming series of events. This makes a tough call for the Sabres regarding him. Paying more than $7 million annually would challenge their cap situation, especially with other RFAs being taken into account. Should things not work out roster-wise, Buffalo could investigate shopping the talented defenseman instead of risking future flexibility with him.

On the other hand, the Anaheim Ducks are proceeding with their coaching search, and Joel Quenneville has become the frontrunner. Reports have confirmed recent interviews with Quenneville for the head coach position. Considering his previous successes, in conjunction with a personal relationship with Ducks GM Pat Verbeek, this situation appears to fit naturally. Although rumors suggest an offer might have already been extended, nothing has officially been released. Quenneville's potential return is certainly an attractive proposal, although, due to past controversies, opinions are mixed, yet one cannot deny his outstanding coaching record.

Calgary Flames: In for youth and smart spending

Calgary Flames GM Craig Conroy has set out a cautious yet confident view of the offseason ahead. Rather than pursuing expensive free agents, Calgary wants to focus on the internal development of its players while retaining key young assets. Priority is given to contract signings for Matt Coronato, Connor Zary, and Kevin Bahl.

While the team looks for a right-handed center, they aren't willing to force a large signing on themselves with a small market and a desire to retain salary cap flexibility. Being on the positive side with over $34 million in cap space, the Flames are in a strong position to do what Conroy loves: building sustainable success through core players and young talent.

Both Bowen Byram and Joel Quenneville will be closely watched for their futures in the offseason, as will the Calgary Flames' roster. Each one of the decisions made this summer could have effects on the landscape of the league forever, setting up for an exciting NHL season coming up.
