Anthony Davis had the ball, the pressure was on, and he delivered. His game-winning shot brought home a dramatic win, but the aftermath was just as meaningful. In a genuine moment, he talked about his recent difficulties, the burden he’s been dealing with, and how this game was about so much more than simply winning.
Anthony Davis opens up about mental struggles and playing freely
Anthony Davis led the Dallas Mavericks to a 120-118 win against the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night, hitting a crucial floater with only 3.4 seconds left on the clock. With an impressive stat line of 34 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks, this was Davis's best game since becoming a Maverick. After the game, he shared his thoughts on that key shot, his recent struggles, and the team's progress.
Looking back at the play that clinched the game, Davis praised head coach Jason Kidd for the smart strategy that set him up for that winning shot. "Coach Kidd drew up a play for me to head to the left side of the floor, which I like to get to," Davis explained. "It was open, the left side was open, I beat my man and shot a shot that I’ve been shooting for a long time."
Davis openly talked about his recent personal struggles, highlighting his dedication to playing with a clear and focused mindset "I’ve been struggling as of late, you know, mental stuff going on, but today I just wanted to come out and play free and just let the rest take care of itself."
After being traded from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Mavericks in February, which included Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick for Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris, Davis has been getting used to his new squad. He noted that developing chemistry takes time but remains hopeful about how the team is coming together.
The Mavericks' win against the Hawks brought their record to 38-39, making it three victories in their last four games as they strive for a playoff spot. Davis and the squad are looking to carry this momentum into their next game against the Los Angeles Clippers.
