The Houston Rockets delivered a powerful defensive performance, breaking the Oklahoma City Thunder's 11-game winning streak with a 125-111 victory on Friday night. They effectively neutralized Thunder's key player, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, allowing him to score just one free throw throughout the match. This marked his lowest free throw output of the season, highlighting the Rockets' commitment to limiting his effectiveness.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander surpasses Michael Jordan with 70 consecutive 20-point games
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander only got to the free-throw line once, yet he still racked up 22 points and handed out eight assists. Impressively, he has now scored 20 or more points in 70 straight games, breaking Michael Jordan's previous record of 69 games from the 1990-91 season. However, the Rockets' defense did a great job limiting his usual scoring efficiency, making him depend more on field goals instead of his usual free throws.
Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun were the stars of the Rockets' offense, combining for an outstanding 65 points—34 from Green and 31 from Sengun. Their strong showing helped Houston build a significant lead, which at one point reached 23 points late in the second quarter. The Rockets also excelled in rebounding, outpacing the Thunder 48-33, which reduced Oklahoma City's chances for second chances and emphasized Houston's physicality in the paint.
During the fourth quarter the Thunder pushed the score to nine points closer but the Rockets executed a 7-2 run which secured their victory. Oklahoma City failed to reduce the deficit beyond nine points due to crucial defensive play and strategic scoring.
This win not only halted the Thunder's impressive streak but also marked a significant moment for the Rockets, who have now won 14 out of their last 16 games, raising their season record to 51-27. Houston's ability to implement a strategy that neutralizes top opponents while maximizing their offensive strengths positions them as a strong contender as the playoffs approach.
On the flip side, the Thunder still hold the top spot in the Western Conference standings, even after their recent loss. Gilgeous-Alexander's impressive consistency is a shining highlight for Oklahoma City, as they work on adjusting to the tough defensive strategies from other teams.
