Martin Nguyen, ONE Championship’s one of the most accomplished MMA fighters, has officially put a full stop on his career. The Vietnamese-Australian athlete stepped into the cage for the final time at ONE 171: Qatar, dealing with growing contender Shamil Gasanov. Though Nguyen struggled against Gasanov’s grappling-heavy technique and was misplaced by unanimous decision, the result became secondary to what was observed. In a defining moment, Nguyen made a statement after the fight, signaling the stop of his adventure as a professional fighter.

In a submit-combat interview with The Bangkok Post, Martin Nguyen made it clear that his selection wasn’t based on a decline in performance but as a substitute on his choice to make investments inside the next generation of opponents, as he reflects that more great fighters and younger generation should come up in his place. “Obviously, it’s been on my mind. Obviously, I know I can still offer a lot more, but I’d rather offer my body to the future, to the younger generation coming up,” Nguyen said about the young fighters. “I’d rather give all my time to them and see them succeed, and that’s more rewarding than me succeeding to a certain pinnacle and then calling it quits.” Right after the match, he waved goodbye to his fans, marking the end of his MMA career.
ONE Championship’s official Instagram account also posted a video featuring Martin Nguyen, where he expressed his heartfelt gratitude to fans for their continuous support throughout his career. He also shared an inspiring message, urging everyone to stay determined and never give up on their dreams, no matter the challenges they face.

Nguyen leaves behind a historic legacy in ONE Championship. He has become the first fighter to maintain global titles concurrently, reigning over the featherweight and light-weight divisions. Throughout his career, he brought a number of the most memorable moments within the promotion's records, securing wins towards elite names like Christian Lee, Eduard Folayang, and Marat Gafurov. Notably, he remains the best fighter to have beaten Christian Lee twice.
Whether as a coach, mentor, or ambassador for the game, he's decided to offer back everything for the game, making sure that future young fighters will maintain to push the legacy of MMA.
