“There’s data behind everything”: Cody Bellinger explains Yankees' Torpedo-style bat's significance

The New York Yankees displayed remarkable offensive performance by defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 20-9, setting a team record with nine home runs. The success is attributed to a new bat design, called the 'torpedo,' designed to increase barreled balls and decrease misses, which is within MLB regulations.

The New York Yankees, in their second game of the season, showed an incredible offensive performance by defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 20-9 on Saturday. The Yankees managed to hit a team-record nine home runs. Thanks to the new bat style the New York Yankees have adopted, where you move the barrel of the bat a little further down and closer to the label, which is where their hitters tend to make contact. Yes it is a new design and it is also legal as per the MLB rules. Find out how.

Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone praises teams performance thanks to new bat style

The New York Yankees manager, Aaron Boone, talking about the second game of the season, praised the team’s brilliant performance and talked about how interesting it was to introduce the new style. Boone said:
"Wow, what a performance. Kind of a weird, crazy game, Obviously, a lot of really great at-bats. Just a weird sky, weird game. Good to get a win."
On Saturday, the Yankees’ ace Jazz Chisholm and Anthony Volpe managed to hit home runs with the new style bat, with a unique shape.

The Yankees’ Cody Bellinger also used a similar bat, but that one has a less extreme design, and he also hit a home run on Saturday. Speaking to the New York Daily News, Bellinger said:
"There's ways to move the weight of the bat, Some guys like top heavy. Some guys like hand-loaded bats. You just gotta find a bat that feels good, that kind of moves with you. I'm a believer in swinging different things. You can test your swing path, you can test your exit velocity. There's data behind everything now."

Former Yankees’ infielder Kevin Smith explains how Torpedo has a straightforward design

As per one of the New York Yankees’ former infielder KevinSmith, this new bat shape with a straightforward design, is called the "torpedo" and it was designed by someone in the team's front office. The main purpose is to decrease misses and increase barreled balls.
Smith took to X where he said, “Yes, the Yankees have a literal genius MIT Physicist, Lenny (who is the man), on payroll. He invented the “Torpedo” barrel. It brings more wood - and mass - to where you most often make contact as a hitter. The idea is to increase the number of “barrels” and decrease misses.”

With introduction to the new design, there are few people who have expressed their objections, but the bats don't appear to break any MLB rules. As per the MLB rules, the league allows bats that can be no longer than 42 inches or thicker than 2.61 inches. They must be built with solid wood and should not have a cup at the tip deeper than an inch. The bat grip substances also can't go longer than 18 inches from the bottom of the handle.
