Franco Colapinto questions Drive to Survive season 7 makers in deleted post: “Why do they record me so much”

Alpine reserve driver Franco Colapinto recently shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) criticizing Drive to Survive season 7 but deleted it shortly after. Colapinto seems to be disappointed by the lack of screen time he received on the show, despite being filmed extensively by the makers. He made his Formula 1 debut last year and is the only F1 driver from Argentina after almost two decades.

Possibly frustrated, Colapinto wrote on X, “I’m watching the last episodes of DTS, and they put the cap on not even 5 seconds! I don’t even appear for 5!!! WHY DO THEY RECORD ME SO MUCH?” He deleted the post immediately. It is worth noting that Colapinto's name does come up in the series, but only in a blink-and-you-miss-it commentary montage.

It seems Colapinto’s F1 debut was planned for the Netflix series’ seventh season but didn’t make it to the final cut. However, the new season does give significant screen time to Mercedes rookie driver Kimi Antonelli, who made his F1 debut at 18, filling Lewis Hamilton’s seat. Formula 1: Drive to Survive season 7 highlights several storylines, including Hamilton’s switch from Mercedes to Ferrari, Toto Wolff replacing him with 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli, and Carlos Sainz searching for a seat after his Ferrari exit before finally landing at Williams. It also showcases reigning champion Max Verstappen’s race to victory in the last F1 season, as well as the controversy surrounding Red Bull boss Christian Horner.

Around the much-anticipated release of the Netflix series, Drive to Survive executive producer James Gay-Rees told Formula1.com, “On a wider level, I think what’s exciting is that next generation of drivers coming into the sport with six rookies. It’s great to have that new blood, and it’s going to be fascinating to see which of them can really hold their own and do the business.”

After a long time, 21-year-old Colapinto became the first Argentinian to become an F1 driver when he replaced Logan Sargeant at Williams and competed in the last nine races of the season. He is now a reserve driver for Alpine and will be competing in the new season, beginning with the Australian Grand Prix.
