The highly anticipated Formula 1-themed blockbuster F1, starring
Brad Pitt, finally has an official release date. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, known for Top Gun: Maverick, the film will hit theaters on June 27, 2025. The excitement surrounding the film has been building for over a year, with Formula 1’s X account recently confirming the date alongside the release of a new promotional image and trailer. The film promises a gripping mix of speed, drama, and redemption, set against the backdrop of the high-stakes world of Formula 1 racing.
Brad Pitt’s High-Octane F1 Film Sets June 2025 Release Date
In F1, Brad Pitt plays Sonny Hayes, a former Formula 1 star from the 1990s whose career was nearly destroyed by a devastating accident. Thirty years later, Sonny has transitioned into endurance racing, living as a nomadic racer-for-hire. His past comes calling when his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (played by Javier Bardem), now the owner of a struggling Formula 1 team, asks him to return to the track for one last shot at glory. Ruben’s team, APXGP, is on the verge of collapse, and Sonny’s experience might be the key to saving it.
However, the comeback isn’t without challenges. Sonny’s biggest rival is his own teammate, the young and talented rookie Joshua Pearce (played by Damson Idris). The tension between the two fuels the core drama of the film. In the trailer, Pearce is heard saying, “He’s old, he’s such a prick … he’s quick though.” This sets the stage for a classic mentor-versus-prodigy dynamic, reminiscent of the dynamic in Bull Durham.
Director Joseph Kosinski shared insights into Pitt’s dedication to the role, stating, “Watching Brad drive around at speeds over 180 miles an hour was really impressive to see because it's not something you can just learn overnight. The dedication and the focus that Brad put into this process has been amazing to witness. This film has got it all: Brad Pitt, speed, thrills, an epic underdog story, drama, humor, and a little bit of romance.”
A Star-Studded Cast and Authentic Racing Action
Alongside Pitt and Idris, the film features a powerhouse cast including Kerry Condon, Sarah Niles, Tobias Menzies, Kim Bodnia, Samson Kayo, and Simone Ashley of Bridgerton fame. Academy Award winner Javier Bardem takes on the crucial role of Ruben Cervantes, while Lewis Hamilton not only serves as a producer but also makes a cameo appearance.
What sets F1 apart from typical racing films is its authenticity. Kosinski shot key scenes during real Grand Prix races, bringing a level of realism rarely seen in sports films. The film was made in collaboration with Formula 1 and its ten teams, with Kosinski calling them “the eleventh team” for their behind-the-scenes contributions. Cameos from top Formula 1 drivers like Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz Jr., Lando Norris, George Russell, and Sergio Pérez will further enhance the film's authenticity.
Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Kosinski, Lewis Hamilton, Brad Pitt (through Plan B Entertainment), Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Chad Oman, the project reflects the high standards of filmmaking expected from such a talented team. Ehren Kruger, known for his work on Top Gun: Maverick, penned the script, promising a narrative that blends intense racing action with personal redemption and emotional depth.
The trailer offers a glimpse into the film’s thrilling tone, showcasing stunning race footage and the intense rivalry between Sonny and Joshua. The film explores themes of mentorship, competition, and the difficult road to redemption. Hayes’ journey back to the top of Formula 1 reflects not only his personal struggle but also the pressures of an unforgiving sport where even your teammate can be your toughest opponent.
