'Missed a Ferrari by 23 runs': Virender Sehwag's cheeky congratulation to son Aaryavir after 297-run knock

Aaryavir Sehwag, son of former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag, narrowly missed out on a triple century, scoring a remarkable 297 runs for Delhi against Meghalaya in the Cooch Behar Trophy. His innings, studded with 51 fours and three sixes, fell just short of his father's playful challenge of surpassing his career-best Test score of 319 for a Ferrari reward.

NEW DELHI: Aaryavir Sehwag, son of former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag, came agonizingly close to a triple century with a spectacular knock of 297 in the Cooch Behar Trophy, playing for Delhi against Meghalaya.
His fearless innings, reminiscent of his father’s explosive batting style, powered Delhi to a commanding total, but it was Virender Sehwag’s witty congratulatory tweet that stole the spotlight.
Taking to social media platform X, Sehwag senior praised his son’s monumental effort while injecting humor into the occasion: "Well played @aaryavirsehwag. Missed a Ferrari by 23 runs. But well done, keep the fire alive and may you score many more daddy hundreds and doubles and triples. Khel jaao.."

The tweet was a nod to Sehwag’s famous promise from 2015, where he jokingly said he would gift his children a Ferrari if they managed to surpass his career-best Test score of 319, even in school cricket.
"Yes, my kids know I have made some humongous scores in Test cricket. So I have told them, if you cross that 319-run mark even in school cricket, I will present you a Ferrari," Sehwag had said.

Aaryavir's innings, spanning 309 balls, was a stunning display of dominance, featuring 51 fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 96.12. He was finally dismissed by Rudra Singh Rathore, falling just three runs short of becoming a triple-centurion. His knock propelled Delhi to an imposing 623/5 declared in reply to Meghalaya’s 260.
While Aaryavir's near-triple century was the cricketing highlight, his father’s tongue-in-cheek message resonated widely among fans, drawing attention to the pressure - and humor - of being the son of a cricketing great.
