Mohammed Siraj was booed by the crowd at the Adelaide Oval on Saturday for giving a send-off to local hero and centurion Travis Head after the Indian pacer dismissed the Australian just before the tea break on day two of the second Test.
Head scored an entertaining 140 off 141 balls to put his team in the driver's seat after the hosts had dismissed India for just 180 in their first innings on the opening day after Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat in the day-night pink-ball match.
ALSO WATCHHead, who also tormented India with winning tons in the ODI World Cup final and World Test Championship final last year, hit 17 fours and 4 sixes in his kock. Siraj cleaned him up and then let out a few angry words before Head walked off with an equally fiery couple of expletives.
As soon as Head left the ground after a thunderous applause, the crowd started booing every move made by Siraj on the field.
Speaking on live broadcast, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar criticised Siraj for his behaviour that was uncalled for.
"The guy has scored 140! If he had scored one or two, and you give him a send-off, that's a completely different thing," said Gavaskar.
"He is a local hero. By giving Head a send-off, Siraj became the villain for the crowd. Had he applauded his century, he would have been appreciated."
Also part of the conversation during the break was former Australia opener Matthew Hayden, who agreed with Gavaskar.
"You should know how to be humble," said Hayden.
