What is Tritya shradha

Pitru Paksha shradh ceremonies are highly popular among the Hindus for several reasons. Pitru Paksha is the sixteen day period extending from the Purnima to Amavasya during the Bhadrapada (August – September) month. Though Shradh ceremonies are performed on the exact month and tithi when the ancestor departed, during Pitru Paksha special shradh is performed on the appropriate tithis in order to get special blessings of the ancestors. Shastras attach a great merit to these shradh rituals since they are highly beneficial.
Tritiya Shradh
In this year, Tritiya Shradh falls on Thursday, 17th September 2019.
Tritiya shradh meant for performing shradh for the ancestors departed on the Tritiya tithi irrespective of whether they died during Krishna paksha or Shukla paksha. The other popularly known name of Tritiya shradh is Teej Shradh. Hinduism has made performance of shradh ceremonies a compulsory obligation. Failing to perform shradh to the ancestors will result in pitru shaap or the curse of the ancestors resulting in bad luck, diseases and challenges in the families. Any default happening in the performance of shradh ceremonies are compensated during the Pitru Paksha by performing special shradh ceremonies.
Importance of Pitru Paksha Shradh
A lot of stories in Hindu mythology describe the importance of the Pitru Paksha period. Three generations of the deceased ancestors stay in the Pitru Lok (ancestral world). During the Pitru paksha period, the ancestors come down to the earth to visit their families and descendants. Performing shradh and tarpan during this period will immensely please them and win their blessings for the welfare of the family.
