What is Dashami shradha

If you are looking for the best time to perform shradh to the deceased ancestors in the family, you need not seek father than Pitru Paksha. This is a sixteen day period exclusively dedicated to performing shradh and tarpan for the ancestors. The period extends from the Purnima to Amavasya in the month of Bhadrapada (August – September). Pitru Paksha shradh must be performed on the tithi when the ancestor died irrespective of whether the death occurred in Krishna Paksha or Shukla Paksha. Due to the immense merits received by performing the Pitru Paksha Shradh, a large number of Hindus actively take up Shradh ceremonies during this period.

This day is designated to perform the shradh ceremonies of the ancestors died in the Dashami tithi of any month. It is said that the Pitrus (ancestors) visit their descendants on the earth during the Pitru Paksha period in order to accept the offerings they do. In fact, the only way the residents of the ancestral worlds can survive is through the tarpan and shradh offered by their descendants on the earth. Therefore the acts of shradh and tarpan can help appease the hunger of the deceased and also win their blessings for the welfare of the family.
