Zojila Pass reopens after 32 days after heavy snowfall: An impressive feat by the BRO

In an impressive feat, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has successfully reopened the Zojila Pass after a challenging closure due to heavy snowfall. The pass, which connects the Kashmir Valley to Ladakh, was cleared for traffic on 1st April 2025, just 32 days after being shut down. This rapid reopening marks a significant achievement for the BRO, particularly given the tough conditions and strategic importance of the pass.
About Zojila Pass
The Zojila Pass, located on the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri route at an elevation of 11,643 feet, is a crucial lifeline for both civilian and military movement. This vital route not only links the Kashmir Valley with Ladakh but also plays an essential role in transporting troops and supplies to regions with heightened strategic significance, including areas like Kargil, Siachen, and Daulat Beg Oldi.
Unusual Snowfall
This year's reopening was particularly remarkable due to the severe and unusual snowfall that occurred between 27th February and 16th March, causing significant snow accumulation. These extreme conditions, including sub-zero temperatures, high-velocity winds, and avalanche-prone areas, made it extremely difficult to clear the pass. The Zojila Pass, typically closed by mid-November and reopened only in late April, had not faced such a prolonged closure in recent years. However, despite these challenges, the BRO's personnel began their snow-clearing operations as soon as the weather improved.
Quick Restoration by BRO
Under Project Beacon and Project Vijayak, the BRO worked tirelessly to restore the Zojila Pass. The snow removal operation, which began on 17th March, was completed in an impressive 15 days, by 31st March. This rapid restoration, completed despite adverse weather conditions, underscores the BRO's expertise in managing and maintaining infrastructure in challenging terrains.
The Role of the BRO

Founded in 1960, the BRO is tasked with constructing and maintaining strategic roads and infrastructure, especially in remote and rugged areas. With over 41,600 personnel, including officers and subordinates, the organization is crucial in strengthening India’s defense infrastructure.
