Twenty-nine-year-old Indian roller skater, Aarathy Kasturi Raj, has led a rollercoaster life. She completed her MBBS and also did a Masters in Clinical Embryology while simultaneously preparing for the Asian Games 2023. However, during a practice session on May 26 (four months before the Asian Games), a major accident left her with more than 20 cuts on her forehead, which required 26 stitches!
In an interview with us, she discusses her challenges, memorable moments, and the constant support from her family members, which she calls, the backbone of her success...
THE JOURNEY TO THE PODIUMIt all began on December 25, 2021, with the first trial. She began training in Chennai under the guidance of coach Sathyamoorthy. Over the past year, in preparation for the Asian Games, she received training from the Belgian coach Ferri, in collaboration with an Indian coach and a team known as Swings on Wings.
She began her fitness training with her coach Kotiswaran, under whose guidance, her strength and conditioning improved significantly. “It had always been a dream of mine to participate in the Asian Games. I have dedicated 22 years of my life to skating, and for us, the Asian Games is like the Olympics. I not only aspired to compete in it but also represent India in the World Games, in which I finished in the top 5,” says Aarathy.
‘OWE MY SUCCESS TO MY FAMILY’I owe my success to my family. They are my strongest support system. My father, Kasturi Raj, has never missed any of my skating tournaments. My mother Mala Raj, is a dedicated doctor, so she doesn’t travel too much. I also have a younger sister, who is a lawyer; she is my best friend and a significant support system in my life. My in-laws, too, have been the reason for my success.
‘MARRIAGE CHANGED MY LIFE ONLY FOR THE BETTER’In 2019, Aarathy married Tamil Nadu cricket team’s fast bowler Sandeep Warrier. “I think that was one of the biggest blessings. Usually, everyone says that life changes after marriage, and for me, it changed only for the good,” she adds. Her husband, she says, has been a constant source of encouragement and support. “He’s never once suggested that I quit the sport. Instead, he’s consistently motivated me to excel in both studies and sports.”
GET TO KNOW AARATHY I love sleeping, and that’s my best hobby. I have three best friends, and they come and detox me from what I am going through. I also love reading once in a while.
My husband is a significant role model for me. His work ethic and his approach to sports are qualities I truly admire. We began as friends, and we’ve known each other for eight years now. Before our marriage, I wasn’t a big fan of cricket, but now that I work alongside him, I’ve gained a deep appreciation for the immense effort he puts into his sport. It’s made me realise that every sport has its unique challenges and demands
