The Lifespan of a Fact by John D'Agata and Jim Fingal is a short book about the relevance of fact checking. One of the authors, John D'Agata was rejected by a magazine that commissioned an essay due to factual inaccuracies. That essay was the foundation of his critically acclaimed book
About a Mountain was accepted by another magazine, The Believer, but not before they handed it to their own fact-checker, Jim Fingal.
That assignment resulted in seven years of arguments, negotiations, and revisions as D'Agata and Fingal struggled to navigate the boundaries of literary nonfiction.
The book,
The Lifespan of a Fact, includes the essay and the correspondence between John D'Agata and Jim Fingal, the fact checker, and through the questions where the lines of literary non-fiction.
The book is being adapted to a Broadway play written by three Broadway newcomers, Jeremy Kareken, David Murrell and Gordon Farrell.
Daniel Radcliffe, best known for his role as Harry Potter in the movie adaptations of the famous book series, will play the fact checker. He has done several Broadway and Off Broadway plays but this will be his first time originating a role on Broadway.
Bobby Cannavale will play John D’Agata and Cherry Jones will play a fictional version of boss Jim Fingal's(The fact checker's) boss.
The play is to begin performances Sept. 20 and to open Oct. 18 at Studio 54 on Broadway.
