Ursula K. Le Guinn, the famous author of several fantasy and science fiction novels passed away at the beginning of the year at the age of 88. A documentary on her life and her evolution as an author will finally be releasing this year.
Director Arwen Curry has had a long journey trying to produce this documentary. She filmed with Ursula for 10 years and researched for even more.
In 2016 she started a campaign on Kickstarter to help fund the film and fans contribution exceeded the amount generously. The campaign was to raise $80,000 but they were pledged $234,202.
The documentary took longer to complete than expected but now it's finally down to be premiered at Sheffield Doc/Fest in Sheffield, UK on June 10, 2018. The trailer is up on its official website.
The documentary will show Ursula's evolution as a writer. She wrote a lot of fantasy and science fiction novels and her contribution to both fields in their formative years is irreplaceable. They were fields dominated by male protagonists and she herself struggled to include female characters. The film will reveal how she overcame such challenges and grew into the writer who addressed so many issues so beautifully in her books. She opened the avenue for future female authors who wanted to write in the same genres and Ursula truly inspired many famous authors of today.
We can see this in the documentary which includes words by Margaret Atwood, David Mitchell,
Neil Gaiman, Samuel R. Delany, Michael Chabon, Vonda N. McIntyre, Adrienne Maree Brown, China Miéville, Annalee Newitz, and Theodora Goss.
“I don’t think
Harry Potter could have existed without
Earthsea. That was the original, the finest and the best,” Neil Gaiman states in the trailer.
