Assam Congress spokesperson held over post on BJP MLAs
GUWAHATI: Assam Police arrested on Saturday Congress spokesperson Reetam Singh over a social media post targeting three BJP politicians, including a former state chief and two sitting legislators.
Singh was taken into custody from his home in North Lakhimpur following a complaint filed by the wife of BJP MLA Manab Deka. The complaint stemmed from a March 13 post on X in which Singh shared photos of people convicted in a rape case and questioned whether the law applies equally to BJP ministers and MLAs accused of similar crimes.
Police charged Singh under BNS section 356(2). He also faces charges under provisions of SC/ST Act of 1989.
Singh argued his arrest without notice amounted to contempt of court. "More police are here. No one is saying why I am being taken away. I am a lawyer. Where will I run? Why such harassment and pressure on an officer of the court?" he wrote in a series of posts.
