A devastating midair collision between an American Airlines flight and a Black Hawk helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport has resulted in the presumed deaths of all 67 people on board the aircraft. The tragedy occurred on January 29 as the plane was attempting to land, making it one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent U.S. history.
On Saturday, the Army disclosed the identity of the third crew member aboard the Black Hawk helicopter. According to a report by The Independent, Captain Rebecca Lobach, a 28-year-old native of Durham, N.C., was a distinguished military graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was among the top 20% of cadets nationwide.
She lost her life alongside her fellow crew members—Chief Warrant Officer Andrew Eaves, 39, of Great Mills, Md., and Staff Sergeant Ryan O'Hara, 28, of Lilburn, Ga.—when their Black Hawk helicopter collided with an American Airlines-affiliated flight. The family of Lobach had reportedly asked the army not to reveal the name of her daughter.
