Seems like, after letting go of their HRH (His/Her Royal Highness) titles,
Prince Harry and Meghan might lose out on their Sussex titles as well.
Since Meghan’s lifestyle mini series ‘With Love, Meghan’ premiered on Netflix, the former American actress has been attracting a lot of attention - and it’s safe to say - all of it is not quite positive ones!
Apart from all the criticism Meghan has drawn to her new venture, one particular bit hasn’t gone down well with the netizens. However, now it seems the same hasn’t gone down well with the British Royals as well.
What happened?
As seen in the second episode of the lifestyle show, Meghan and
Mindy Kaling prepared for a garden party and talked about foods they ate when they were kids. As Kaling was surprised when Meghan revealed her childhood food haits, The Mindy Project star said, "People wouldn’t believe that
Meghan Markle ate at Jack in the Box!"
Meghan then went on to correct her, saying, "It’s so funny, too, that you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m Sussex now." She added, "You have kids and you go, ‘No, I share my name with my children,' " she emphasized. "I didn’t know how meaningful that would be to me, but it just means so much to go; this is our family name, our little family name."
Kaling nodded to her and replied, "Now I know, and I love it."
Later, Meghan revealed to PEOPLE that the Sussex name "is part of our love story" that she will tell Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet about one day, saying "I think as the kids get older, they’re so excited about, ‘Oh my gosh, Mama and Papa, how did you meet?’ I think that will come with time as they get older, but for right now, a huge part of our love story is that we share the name Sussex.”
Is she Meghan Sussex now?
After, as the internet called it, Meghan made such a ‘fuss’ about her Royal surname despite stepping down as Senior Royals,
Drew Barrymore made sure to call Meghan Markle by her 'family name' when the Duchess of Sussex appeared on her namesake talk show.
In a preview of the show, Barrymore was seen and heard addressing her guest as "Meghan Sussex" before the "Fast Five" segment began.
The trouble brews!
Although Meghan has boasted her title quite a bit in the last few days, there’s a possibility that she and Prince Harry may face losing their Duchess and Duke of Sussex titles. According to reports, that might happen if they continue making critical remarks about the Royal Family.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got married in 2018, and the couple stepped down as senior royals in 2020. As part of their agreement, Buckingham Palace stated that they would no longer use the "His/Her Royal Highness" (HRH) honorifics, as they were no longer working members of the Royal Family. However, while they relinquished their HRH titles, they retained their titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
When King Charles ascended to the throne in September 2022 after Queen Elizabeth II passed away, Archie and Lilibet were afforded the titles of prince and princess. Soon after, the children's names were updated on the royal family's website to "Prince Archie of Sussex" and "Princess Lilibet of Sussex" in the official line of succession.
A royal source told The Daily Mail that the Royal Family is considering a potential sanction that could be enforced if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle publicly criticise the monarchy again. It is believed that stripping them of their Sussex titles would require an Act of Parliament. This warning follows years of public statements by the couple that have been seen as damaging to the monarchy.
As reported by GB News, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex first made waves with their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, where they leveled serious allegations against the Royal Family. This was followed by their 2022 Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan and Harry’s 2023 memoir Spare, which revealed personal details about his relationships and disputes with senior royals.
Meghan’s subtle message to the Royals:
According to reports, Meghan’s comments on her show have been interpreted as a "warning shot" to the Royal Family, signaling her strong desire to keep the Sussex name.
She further elaborated in an interview with People magazine, saying, “It’s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn’t recognized how meaningful that would be to me until we had children. I love that that is something that Archie, Lili, H, and I all have together. It means a lot to me.”

Meghan Markle's show 'With Love, Meghan' is receiving all sorts of responses from across the world. While some are trolling her for shifting for shifting pretzels from packaged bags to a sandwich bag and then labeling them to be perceived as she cooked it, others are loving her culinary skills.
