In a recent and completely unanticipated move, US President Donald Trump's administration changed the official White House COVID--19 website to present a theory on the origin of COVID-19 titled 'Lab Leak The True Origins of COVID-19'. The homepage of the website also includes a photograph of Trump walking ahead with the title in the background.

The Origin

The website apparently reveals the "true origin" of COVID-19. The website stated that the virus possesses a "biological characteristic" that is not found naturally. There are other claims such as data showing that all COVID-19 cases were spread from a single introduction to humans and that Wuhan is China's foremost SARS research lab with a history of gain-of-function research conducted at inadequate biosafety levels. The website also alleged that researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) were sick with COVID-like symptoms in the fall of 2019, months before COVID-19 was discovered at the Huanan Seafood Market.

Multiple parties to be blamed

The website also has various sections blaming certain personalities for the pandemic. Firstly, the publication titled “The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2” is said to have pushed a false narrative to the public under the guidance of Dr Fauci. Secondly, Ecohealth Alliance Inc. was blamed for using U.S. taxpayer dollars to facilitate "dangerous" gain-of-function research in Wuhan, China and violating the terms of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant.
Other blatant conspiracy theories claimed that the Biden administration misled people about COVID's origins and "demonized alternative treatments." It also mentioned that practices such as social distancing, mask mandates and lockdowns were not scientifically proven to be effective steps of prevention.

Social media reactions

People all over social media have been surprised by the recent change.
"The White House just updated http://COVID.gov to a website outlining how COVID originated from a Chinese lab leak and they EXPOSED Dr. Fauci’s efforts to cover it all up", wrote a user on X. "The Trump White House repurposed http://COVID.gov to a website outlining how SARS-Cov-2 was a lab leak. Trump and his administration know what happened, and they are beginning the process of breaking it to the world. Conspiracy theory no more!" added another.

Most have believed the website's information to be the truth, as it mentions what was largely purported to be the reality.
