Choreographer-actor
Sathish Krishnan is turning director with Kiss, which stars
Kavin in the lead role. In a conversation with us, Sathish, who has starred in films such as Unnale Unnale and Beast, refers to his debut venture as a “commercial, love-based film”.
According to the National Award-winning choreographer, direction was the next logical step in his film journey. “Every director I have worked with has moulded me,” says Sathish, adding that choreographers are directors too—directors of dance.
About casting Kavin in the film, he says, “I have spent a lot of time with him, and I know how he is. So, I knew he would be the right fit for the part.”
Sathish is all praise for director Mysskin, who originally held the rights for the title Kiss. “Even though he had renewed and owned the title for several years, when I approached him,
Mysskin sir gave the title to me without any hesitation. So, we had him roll the camera during the puja of the film.”
Preethi Asrani has paired up with Kavin for the project that is set to be completed soon, shares Sathish, who plans to don the director’s hat again. “The process is on. I’m writing for another actor. When I’m done, I will finalise the cast,” he states.
‘The idea was not to have an English title, but to convey the emotion in all languages’Sathish explains why he opted for an English title for his film. “I wanted to have a Tamil title, but one that was the right fit. For instance, Gautham (Vasudev Menon) sir keeps beautiful Tamil titles for his films. Interestingly, Kavin has worked in four films — Dada, Lift, Star, and now Kiss — that have four-letter titles. He said people will suspect that he has been specifically asking for his films be titled in a certain way. But that’s not the case. The idea was not to have an English title, but to convey the emotion in all languages.
