'Kanima': A high-energy dance number from Suriya's 'Retro' boosts the buzz
The film features Suriya as a gangster, and since Karthik Subbaraj is known for setting his stories in Madurai, expectations have skyrocketed. The combination of Karthik Subbaraj and Suriya has only added to the excitement. Today, the film’s second track, 'Kanima', has been officially released. The makers unveiled a promo earlier to hype fans for 'Kanima'. Composed by Santhosh Narayanan, the high-energy dance track is sung by the composer and The Indian Choral Ensemble is set in a wedding backdrop and it heightens the expectation for the periodic action drama.

'Retro' stars Pooja Hegde as the female lead with Joju George, Jayaram, Karunakaran, Prem, and others in key roles. The teaser revealed that Pooja Hegde plays a mute character, while Suriya’s look and intense action sequences hint at a stunning role. The first single, 'Kannadi Poove', became a chartbuster, with Santhosh Narayanan’s soul-stirring rendition winning over fans. The song, portraying a prisoner longing for his love, deeply resonated with listeners.
After the underperformance of his last release 'Kanguva' at the box office, Suriya has pinned high hopes on 'Retro'. Fans have noticed a trend where both 'Kannadi Poove' and 'Kanima' start with ‘K’, leading to speculation that Suriya deliberately chose ‘K’ songs to bring good luck after Kanguva’s failure. With two love songs out, fans are now eagerly awaiting to hear the next official update. Meanwhile, speculation continues that 'Kanima' is linked to Pooja Hegde’s character, possibly named Kanimozhi.
Determined to make a strong comeback, Suriya is now focusing on 'Retro', 'Vaadivaasal', and a bilingual project. Fans are hopeful that 'Retro' will mark his return to box office glory. 'Retro' is scheduled to hit the big screens on May 1, and the mega-budget film is to be released simultaneously in multiple languages.
