Gautham Vasudev Menon regrets directing Dhanush's 'Ennai Noki Paayum Thota'
Director Gautham Vasudev Menon is no stranger to controversy, often making headlines for his candid remarks. Known for speaking his mind, whether it’s about his films or professional disputes, the acclaimed filmmaker recently stirred attention by publicly disowning one of his popular films, 'Enai Noki Paayum Thota' (2019), starring Dhanush and Megha Akash. In an interview with Hollywood Reporter India, Gautham revealed that he regrets making the film and has often joked about disassociating himself from it. While he clarified that he is not shying away from his responsibilities as the director, he firmly stated that he no longer wants to "own" the movie.
In his words, “The only film I regret doing is 'Enai Noki Paayum Thota, and I’ve been joking about it. I’m not shrinking away from my responsibilities, but it’s just my way of not owning the film. Other than that, there is no regret." His comments have reignited conversations about the project, which was marred by a troubled production history and delays. Reports suggest that during the making of the film, Gautham had a fallout with Dhanush, and the two remain estranged even today. Adding to the controversy, industry rumors claim that Dhanush had to step in and ghost-direct parts of the film to ensure its completion.
This isn’t the first time Gautham has distanced himself from 'Enai Noki Paayum Thota'. In an earlier interview with Galatta Plus, he even dismissed the film when it was mentioned, correcting the host who referred to it as one of his works. Despite the film’s eventual release, the mixed reception and behind-the-scenes drama have overshadowed its success. Gautham’s candid admission further underscores his complex relationship with the movie, highlighting the challenges filmmakers face when projects don’t go as planned.
