Sreevalsan J Menon takes you on a musical journey with Swapanam, through Carnatic, sopanasangeetham and more. The nine songs in the film, some of which have made use of Swathi Thirunals compositions, are exquisitely crafted, and can keep you hooked, regardless of your musical tastes. In fact, it has been a long time since there has been a film featuring pure classical music in Malayalam.
Some of the songs in the film might sound too long for the average listener, at nine minutes and longer at times. However, if you are a fan of Carnatic, it is nothing less than pure bliss.
Kaliyay Nee is a sopanasangeetham piece with a delightful idakka intro, and a melodious flute backing. Deepu Nair and Meera Ram Mohan have lent their voices to the song. Kamini Mani Sakhi, voiced by Meera and Kalyani has a consistent mukharshankh throughout, besides a touch of khatam at times which shouldnt be missed.
The Carnatic bit by Shenkottai Harihara Subramanium interspersed into the track makes Mazhaville an interesting composition.
Madhava Masamo is a slow and melodious keerthanam, sung flawlessly by Hariprasad and Sreeranjini Kodampally.
Antharanga Meevidham sounds like a poem set to tune with a drums background, while
Kamoroopan, at 10 minutes, is a Kathakali padam.
Palazhi Thedum has been sung by the composer himself and has amazing classical bits in between. Marasannibhakara, yet another spopanasangeetham piece, is also worth a listen, with an instumental
Seethakalyanam in the middle.
