ABC Talkies, in association with Shot2Shot Films & Entertainment and Kerala’s leading media schools, has announced the 5th edition of The Big Shorts Challenge – Malayalam 2025. This year’s edition promises a transformative experience, introducing major structural changes that will revolutionize how short films are watched, monetized, and recognized.

The Big Shorts Challenge: A Brief History

Launched in January 2022, The Big Shorts Challenge (TBSC) was created to provide an inclusive space where independent filmmakers could showcase their work without the traditional constraints of selection or rejection. Over the years, the competition has grown in both scope and scale, celebrating cinematic talent across different regions of India.
  • First Edition (January 2022): The competition was launched to an enthusiastic response, culminating in a young filmmaker from Karnataka winning the Rs 50,000 cash prize.
  • Second Edition (2023): Focused on Northeast India, the event celebrated linguistic and cultural diversity, offering a platform for storytellers from the region.
  • Third Edition (March 2024): Held in Kerala, this edition attracted over 250 registrations, with more than 75 films participating.
  • Fourth Edition (December 2024): Expanded to Tamil Nadu, this edition saw over 300 registrations and more than 150 short films submitted.
Now, the 5th edition is set to be the most transformative yet, breaking new ground with innovative changes designed to benefit filmmakers and audiences alike.

What’s New in 2025?

1. Free Viewing Model – Filmmakers Earn Per View

One of the most significant changes in this edition is the introduction of a free viewing model. Previously, audiences had to purchase tickets to watch short films. This year, all films will be available for free, drastically increasing viewership potential. However, filmmakers will still earn Rs 1 per unique view, ensuring that their work remains financially rewarding. This approach makes TBSC more accessible while providing an innovative revenue model for creators.

2. Introduction of Jury Awards

For the first time in the history of The Big Shorts Challenge, the competition will feature Jury Awards across multiple categories. This initiative ensures that filmmakers are recognized not only for audience engagement but also for artistic and technical excellence.

3. Sponsorship for ‘Most Promising Filmmaker’

In an unprecedented move, the competition will award a Rs 1,00,000 sponsorship to the Most Promising Filmmaker. Chosen by an esteemed jury, this filmmaker will receive funding for their next short film, offering a significant boost to emerging talent.
“This partnership with Shot2Shot and Kerala’s top media schools is a monumental step toward nurturing young filmmakers in Kerala. Together, we are empowering them to tell their stories and achieve their cinematic dreams.” — Shalibhadra Shah, Founder & CEO, ABC Talkies
