The Big Fat Company has been creating waves for over a year now with
Head 2 Head, their adaptation of the
Girish Karnad classic,
Hayavadana. This production will feature plus-sized actors on stage as to recreate the familiar tale. The actors will also add a fresh perspective to the narrative into which they have woven their personal stories.
Speaking about the play, Krithi Bettadh, who essays the role of Padmini, said, "The production was mainly about the big fat people performing.
We just wanted to say that even plus sized people can act. We wanted to empasise that there are no limits to the kind of roles we can take on." Elaborating on the style of the screenplay, Krithi said, "There is no particular format. We felt
Hayavadana is the right story to perform as it deals with the idea and theme of the body and the fable helps us reiterate the significance of our main theme — bringing out the story of a big fat person." "We have tried different layers in the play and we have added many anecdotes. After a year having passed since our first show, new members have been added to the cast. Their stories have also been incorporated into the narrative," she added.
Directed by Shabari Rao, this Kannada play uses theatre as a medium to raise social, cultural and political questions that stem from the experience of being a plus size actor in today’s world. The play, starring Krithi Bettadh, Sindhu Hegde, Vidya Ulithaya, Gowtham Upadhya and Anuradha HR, will be staged on November 3, at 3.30 pm and 7.30 pm, at
Shoonya Centre for Art and Somatic Practices.
