Veteran actor Mushtaq Khan, who is best known for his memorable roles in films like Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Krantiveer, Gadar, and Stree, has opened up about the disparities in payments he faced during the making of Anees Bazmee’s 2007 blockbuster comedy Welcome. The film featured an ensemble cast including Akshay Kumar, Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar, and Katrina Kaif but Mushtaq revealed that despite being part of the film for an extended shoot schedule, he was paid significantly less than even the star actors’ support staff.
Fixed pay, no matter how many days on set
In a recent interview with Filmymantra Media, Mushtaq explained how the remuneration was fixed irrespective of the number of days spent on the shoot. “When we have an agreement for anything, it is said that it is a 20-day shoot or a 25-day shoot. Accordingly, we decide our payment. I asked, ‘How much is the wage?’ You said it is a 25-day wage. Accordingly, we decide our payment.”
He emphasized that he never took up the matter with Akshay Kumar or Anil Kapoor, as it wasn’t about them, but the system. “I have not done this with Akshay Kumar or Anil Kapoor. I have gone to them [only for work], not for this issue.”
'Welcome' famed actor Mushtaq Khan reveals Akshay Kumar's staff was paid more than him in the movie; says 'filmmakers want to end this disparity'

'Akshay Kumar’s staff was paid more than me'
Speaking about Akshay's staff getting paid more than him, Mushtaq added, “I will tell you the reason why the payment is more. It is fixed with us that you will do this film in Rs 1 lakh. So you have to do it, even if it takes 20-25 days. Now those people, the staff, are on per day duty. If we are also on duty, then imagine how much money we get.”

While Welcome is fondly remembered for its hilarious scenes and unforgettable characters, Mushtaq’s remarks shine a light on the harsh realities behind the scenes, where character actors are often underpaid despite their significant contributions. Mushtaq played the role of Ballu, one of the close associates of Uday Shetty (played by Nana Patekar) in the film.
