AR Rahman initially declined Aaraattu cameo – Here’s what changed his mind
Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman is set to make a grand return to the Malayalam film industry after three decades, not as a music director, but in a special cameo appearance in *Aaraattu*, starring Mohanlal. Rahman, who last composed for a Malayalam film in Yodha(1991), will be seen playing himself in the action-packed entertainer directed by B Unnikrishnan. Set to hit the big screens on February 18, the film promises to be a treat for Mohanlal fans and music lovers alike.
Getting Rahman to step in front of the camera was no easy feat. In an exclusive chat with OTTplay, director B Unnikrishnan shared how the maestro, known for being camera-shy, was finally convinced to make an appearance. “His sequence is the soul of the movie,” Unnikrishnan revealed. “When scriptwriter Udaykrishna narrated the story, AR Rahman’s character was always part of it. However, we assumed it would be impossible to get him on board because he prefers to stay away from the screen. Even Mohanlal sir suggested we consider an alternative.”
The turning point came when actor Rahman, who is AR Rahman’s co-brother, stepped in. “Mohanlal sir advised me to speak to actor Rahman. He played a crucial role in passing on the synopsis and convincing AR Rahman to at least consider it. After multiple conversations, he finally agreed to a virtual meeting with me,” the director added.
What ultimately persuaded AR Rahman to say yes? According to Unnikrishnan, it was the heartfelt tribute the film pays to his music and his deep connection with Malayali audiences. “I narrated the entire story to him and emphasized how the film acknowledges the profound bond between Malayalis and his music. That struck a chord with him. He told me, ‘I grew up watching Malayalam films and working with legendary music directors from the industry.’ That’s when he finally agreed, with certain conditions,” the director explained.
Rahman shot his portions in Chennai in March 2021, adding an exciting layer to the film’s star power. Aaraattu also features Kannada actress Shraddha Srinath and *KGF* fame Ramachandra Raju in pivotal roles. The film revolves around Mohanlal’s character, Neyyattinkara Gopan, and promises to be a full-fledged entertainer packed with action, drama, and nostalgia.
With AR Rahman making a rare on-screen appearance and Aaraattu celebrating his musical legacy, the film is set to be an unmissable spectacle for fans when it releases on February 18.
