Anurag Kashyap reveals he doesn't want to make the mistakes made by Ram Gopal Varma: 'He had 5 films, he could make two. He would ask others to make three...'
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap began his career as an assistant to Ram Gopal Varma, working on his films for years before branching out on his own. Recently, he shared that while he learned a lot from RGV, he also understood what to avoid in filmmaking. Anurag doesn’t see himself as a producer but as an “enabler” who creates opportunities for others. He prefers not to interfere when directors make films under his production banner.
Anurag on Being an “Enabler” Instead of a Producer
Speaking at an event at Annapurna College of Film and Media, Anurag Kashyap said he doesn’t see himself as a producer but as an “enabler.” If he likes a filmmaker or an idea, he offers support without interfering. He shared that since Udaan, he has never visited the sets of films he has produced.

Why Anurag Avoids Film Sets
Anurag Kashyap explained that he avoids visiting film sets to prevent interfering in a director’s creative process. As a filmmaker himself, he finds it hard to hold back and fears stifling their vision. He recalled how Ram Gopal Varma made this mistake, managing multiple projects at once and micromanaging directors—something Anurag aims to avoid.

Mending Ties with Ram Gopal Varma
Anurag Kashyap and Ram Gopal Varma had some friction after Satya, but they have now reconciled. Anurag called RGV his “mentor” and praised his generosity. He added that while he learned a lot from him, he also understood what not to do in filmmaking, which he believes is just as valuable as learning what to do.
