Jacob Elordi is reportedly in early discussions to take over the lead role in
Ridley Scott’s upcoming post-apocalyptic thriller, The Dog Stars. Originally, the role was set to be played by
Paul Mescal, but scheduling conflicts forced him to step away from the project. Mescal, who stars in Scott’s highly anticipated Gladiator II, had to prioritize his commitment to Sam Mendes’ upcoming Beatles anthology, where he is rumored to play Paul McCartney.
The Dog Stars, based on Peter Heller’s 2012 novel, takes place in a world devastated by a deadly flu pandemic that wipes out most of humanity. The story follows a pilot named Hig, who forms an unlikely bond with a gruff gunman as they struggle to survive against a dangerous group of scavengers known as the Reapers. The screenplay has been adapted by Mark L. Smith, known for his work on The Revenant and the upcoming Twisters.
While Elordi’s deal is not yet finalized, sources suggest he is close to signing on. If confirmed, this would mark another significant milestone in Elordi’s rapidly rising career. The Australian actor, best known for his breakout role in Netflix’s The Kissing Booth, has since built an impressive filmography. He recently played Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla and will soon appear as the monster in Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Frankenstein.
However, scheduling might pose a challenge for Elordi as well. The actor is already set to film the final season of HBO’s
Euphoria and Warner Bros.’ adaptation of Wuthering Heights alongside Margot Robbie, both expected to begin production in early 2025. Ridley Scott is aiming to start filming The Dog Stars in spring 2025, raising questions about whether adjustments will need to be made to accommodate Elordi’s packed schedule.
If everything aligns, The Dog Stars will mark another collaboration between Elordi and a high-profile director, solidifying his position as one of Hollywood’s most in-demand young talents. Ridley Scott, coming off the momentum of Gladiator II, seems eager to bring this intense survival story to life, and Elordi appears poised to deliver a compelling performance in the lead role.
