Theatre worker Joyraj Bhattacharjee and his team have already staged their new production,
Utpal Dutt’s Titumir. Meanwhile, musician Subhadeep Guha, who is thoroughly impressed with the production, composed a song dedicating to the team. “I have not done the music for the play. I am definitely not part of the team. But I was impressed with the production. More than that, I was impressed with the courage of the team that they could stage something as bold as Titumir in today’s time,” said the musician.
Subhadeep is a close associate of one of the lead actors of the production,
Anirban Bhattacharya. “I made the song and sent it to him. He forwarded it to Joyraj and the entire team was elated,” said the musician, who recently received Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar from
Sangeet Natak Akademi.
Besides Anirban, the play also features veteran actor Asit Basu in the lead. A Theatre Formation Paribartak production, the play is slated to be staged in June. “Anirban and I have worked together in Suman Mukhopadhyay’s Raja Lear. He also worked in my film, Ghya Chang Fou. This is the first time I am going to direct him on stage.
Meanwhile, I am also really excited to work with Asit Basu, who had worked with Utpal Dutt for really long,” Joyraj said. Talking about the play, the director said, “Titumir was a peasant leader who fought the atrocities of the British Raj as well as the rich landlords. All the deprived and marginal farmers, including Hindus and Muslims, came together under his leadership. He built a fort of bamboo, called Bnasher Kella, in Narikelbaria near Barasat. His contribution to fighting the oppressor is outstanding. In today’s time, I thought it was important to tell the stories of these heroes.”
