RAJAHMUNDRY: A Telugu family of four presently living in China has the unique distinction of holding
Guinness World Records each. Perhaps it is the only Indian family with all its members holding a world records each. The family achieved the feat in yoga and sports categories. The family lives in Changsha city in China.
The family head, Konathala Vijay, a native of Anakapalle in
Andhra Pradesh, has been living in China since 2012. He is a yoga teacher and choreographer. He runs a yoga and dance school in China. In 2021, he earned a place for himself in the Guinness World Records under the yoga category.
He holds the record for the longest yoga session including advanced asanas such as Ashtavakrasana, Mayurasana, and Bakasana.
He also holds records in the The Asia Book of Records, India Book of Records, and Nobel World Records.
His wife, Konathala Jyothi has become World Record holder for performing advanced yoga poses during the 9th month of pregnancy (just five days before giving birth).
“This accomplishment breaks common perceptions in India about physical activity during late pregnancy, proving that yoga, under proper guidance, is safe and beneficial for mother and child,” she said.
Jyothi is also a record holder in conducting the longest yoga session.
Konathala Jasmitha, 14 year-old daughter of Vijay and Jyothi, holds the record for the fastest number of rope skips on a single leg in one minute.
She set the record with 168 skips in one minute at Zhengzhou in Henan province in China on June 1, 2024.
Their five year-old son, Konathala Shankor, also holds the Guinness record. He made it to the Guinness World Records for the most number of rope skips on a trampoline in one minute - 129 skips.
He achieved the record in the contest held at Changsha in China on October 31, 2024.
Shankor is the youngest in the world to achieve this record in the sports category, breaking a 30 year-old record set by a Japanese professional athlete.
Talking to the TOI from China, Konathala Vijay said that his family aims to promote the practice of yoga and sports globally while representing India on international platforms.
He said that yoga, a gift from Indian culture, “has not only shaped our lives but also allowed us to contribute to our nation’s legacy”. He said that their family dedicates their Guinness records to Telugu film star Chiranjeevi from whom he got the inspiration. Vijay said he felt honoured when Chiranjeevi welcomed his family to his home as a token of appreciation of their achievement.
Vijay said that he wants to dedicate their Guinness World Records to the Nation, Prime Minister,
Narendra Modi, whose vision of International Yoga Day has inspired millions.
He further said, "We deeply admire Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his efforts in promoting India’s rich heritage and aspire to meet him to share our journey and experiences. This would be a dream come true for our family, and we humbly request and opportunity for this meeting".
