NEW DELHI: Union minister
Giriraj Singh criticized
RJD leader
Tejashwi Yadav's statement about discarding the Waqf Amendment Act in Bihar if his party comes to power, warning that Bihar should not follow West Bengal's path.
The comments were made on Thursday in Patna, amid growing political debate over the amended Waqf law and ahead of upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.
Singh was responding to Yadav's declaration that the Waqf Amendment Act would be "thrown in the dustbin" if RJD wins the upcoming Assembly polls in Bihar.
"Tejashwi Yadav said that when he comes to power, he will not allow the Waqf Amendment Act to be implemented... Do they want to turn Bihar into Bengal? Are they reminding people of Bihar of the Murshidabad incident to turn this into Bengal? People of Bihar do not want to turn the state into Bengal under the leadership of RJD," Singh said.
Singh also criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's handling of recent violence in Murshidabad related to Waqf Act protests.
"Mamata Banerjee did not obey her 'raj dharma', and under her protection, violence is taking place, and the era of killings is underway," the BJP leader stated.
The Supreme Court may issue an interim stay on the act following petitions and a two-hour-long hearing on Wednesday.
In preparation for the upcoming electoral battle in Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav met with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi, and Congress MP KC Venugopal on Tuesday.
The Bihar Assembly elections, scheduled for later this year, will see the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), comprising Janata Dal (United) led by Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and the Bharatiya Janata Party, competing against the Mahagathbandhan, which includes Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and left parties.
The amended Waqf law has been challenged in the Supreme Court by multiple opposition leaders and organizations.
