Body in duct: MLAs join Mumbra citizens’ protest
Thane: Mumbra residents, along with political parties, condemned the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl whose body was found in a duct earlier this week, and demanded fast-track trial and justice in the case.
The 20-year-old arrested accused in the case was produced in court and sent to seven days of police custody.
The crime sparked widespread protests in Thane district. Women gathered in large numbers at Mumbra police station.
BJP MLA Niranjan Davkhare visited the police station, and said, "We have been consistently demanding strict punishment for the accused. Such incidents should never occur." He highlighted concerns about illegal activities, including drug trafficking in certain areas of Mumbra.
NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad joined the protesters at the police station, and met the victim's mother to offer condolences and support. Addressing the demonstrators, Awhad assured them that not a single accused would escape punishment. He also raised concerns about increasing drug use in Mumbra city and urged the police to take strict action.
Former corporator Mrunal Pendse joined other voices demanding justice, calling for the case to be fast-tracked to ensure swift punishment to the perpetrators. — Nishikant Karlikar
