Bijnor: Two women died and two men were injured when a speeding truck hit their car on Delhi-Lucknow highway in Moradabad. The truck dragged the car nearly 50 m before crashing into a farm wall.
The accident happened around 11:30pm on Tuesday under Mundhapande police station. Ashu and Rahul—both in their early twenties— and Simran, 18, and Shivani, 25, (only the first names of the four people are available) were returning home to Haryana's Rohtak from Nainital when the truck rammed their car.
Police arrived to find them trapped inside the vehicle, which later caught fire. After an hour-long effort, officers managed to take the four occupants out of the car and took them to the district hospital, where doctors declared Simran and Shivani dead. Ashu, who was driving the car, and Rahul were admitted in critical condition.
Eyewitnesses said the impact was so severe that the car got stuck in the truck's front and was dragged about 50 m before stopping against a farm wall near a checkpoint. The truck driver abandoned the vehicle and fled.
SP (city) Kumar Ranvijay Singh said, "The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination, and the injured are receiving treatment. Their relatives have been informed. Police have taken both damaged vehicles into custody, and legal proceedings are underway."
