officials captured a bear who strayed into human habitation at theChettiyalathur
settlement located inside the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (WWS) after tranquillising it on Friday afternoon.The one year old sub-adult female bear was released into the forests under the Muthanga range of the sanctuary in the night.Forest officials said that the bear chased theMNREGA
workers who had turned up for work near the Chettiyalathur settlement in the morning. Around 32 workers, who were in the team, scattered and ran for their lives. Three workers were injured after falling down as the bear chased them through forest fringes and a coffee plantation.The bear later entered an coffee drying yard and the workers trapped the animal inside it by closing the two gates of the enclosure .Forest officials led by WWS warden NT Sajan and assistant warden Ajay Ghosh V reached the spot and decided to capture the animal after tranquillising it .Forest veterinary surgeon DrArun Zachariah
tranquillised the animal at around 3.30pm and it was trapped in a net and brought to the Muthanga forest range office.Assistant warden Ajay Ghosh said that the bear had sustained an injury above its left eye, possibly in a fight with a leopard or tiger, and it could have caused problems in its vision.The bear was provided first aid and released to the forests under the Muthanga range in the night.The government had allotted funds for the relocation ofChettiyalatur
settlement, located deep inside the WWS, under the voluntary relocation programme.
