Earthquake of magnitude 2.4 strikes Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar

KISHTWAR: A 2.4 magnitude earthquake hit Kishtwar district in Jammu & Kashmir during the early hours of Wednesday, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The NCS reported on X that the seismic activity was recorded at 5:14 am IST. The tremor's epicentre was located at coordinates Latitude 33.18 N and Longitude 75.89 E, with a recorded depth of 5 km beneath the surface.

Afghanistan experienced a 5.9 magnitude earthquake on Wednesday early morning, whilst Bangladesh recorded a separate tremor measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale.
According to UNOCHA (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs), Afghanistan's geographical location makes it susceptible to various natural calamities, including periodic floods, landslides and seismic activities.
UNOCHA reports that recurring earthquakes in Afghanistan severely impact vulnerable populations, who are already struggling with prolonged conflict and insufficient development, leaving them ill-equipped to handle multiple concurrent disasters.
The Red Cross reports that Afghanistan's geographical position, particularly the Hindu Kush Mountain range, experiences yearly seismic activities.
The nation's location between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, coupled with a fault line running through Herat, contributes to its frequent earthquakes.
