Shweta Tiwari & Rakesh Bedi’s ‘marital drama’ in the Pink City
Questions were asked aplenty — ‘So what if a man cheats on his loyal wife? After all he is a man and finally, the woman has to accept him.’ “But what if the woman does the same?’ ‘Why do we see men and women differently for the same crime?’ Delving in the nuances of a troubled relationship, the plot of this play had Jaipur’s audience thinking as Shweta Tiwari and Rakesh Bedi recently presented their play Jab We Separated in the city.

The actors were in Jaipur to stage their popular play as part of the two-day theatre fest Jairangam Seasons, in collaboration with the Felicity Theatre Group of Delhi. Written and directed by Rakesh Bedi, the three-hour play revolved around the lives of a couple Sanjay Sahni (played by Rahul Bhucchar) and Priya Maheshwari Sahni (Shweta), who have filed for divorce.

Bedi plays their neighbour Monty Mitha. The court has given them a period of six months to reconcile but the couple, under the same roof, desperately waits for the time period to end. While the subject of the play was grim, the actors entertained the audience with their witty dialogues and oneliners.

After the play, Bedi said, “Jaipur’s audience has always received our plays well. It’s an enriching experience to be in Jaipur as the city is rich in culture, and the people here respect art as well as artistes.”
