NEW DELHI: With no re-election to the MCD Standing Committee allowed by the high court, sources in AAP claimed "victory" and said it would give them "complete control" over Municipal Corporation of Delhi for the next few months.

With the formation of the Standing Committee delayed now due to the court order, party functionaries claimed that the mayor and the deputy mayor would now have the power to run the civic body and there would be no hindrance in this setup.

"We were a little doubtful of getting a majority in the Standing Committee. But BJP walked into a trap and made a self-goal. The next hearing in the high court will be held after about two months," said a party functionary. "Till then, all proposals will directly come to the MCD House where AAP has a majority and AAP will effectively be able to control and run MCD through its mayor and the House," the functionary added.

BJP, however, said that even if the Standing Committee election concluded on Friday, its overall constitution would have taken at least three weeks. "AAP should know the mayor has very limited anticipatory sanction powers, but each decision will have to be ratified by the Standing Committee sooner or later," Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said.

AAP chief spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj said BJP lacked direction and strategy. "When the SC order came, BJP wanted a promise from us that elections to the Standing Committee will be held immediately after the election of the mayor and deputy mayor, fearing we won't hold it. Now, when we are conducting it, they have moved HC to stop it," Bharadwaj said.

Welcoming the order, senior AAP leader Atishi claimed that BJP's desire to have the result declared in its favour was ruled out by the court. "The court further added that it would examine the powers that are given to both the mayor and the municipal secretary within the purview of DMC Act," Atishi said.

Claiming the order to be a personal victory, mayor Shelly Oberoi alleged that BJP councillors had attacked her and she was forced to run out of the House to save her life. "I hope as this case is further heard in the high court, the truth of the matter will be there for everyone to see," Oberoi said.

The AAP leaders also said they would meet the police commissioner again to discuss the issue of attack on the mayor.
