Coimbatore: The national highways wing of the state highways department is all set to reopen Trichy Road flyover with more safety features on Saturday morning.
The flyover was closed two week ago for installing rumble strips at seven new places to control the speed of vehicles and embed more than 1,000 reflective road studs after two fatal accidents.
“We have installed rumble strips on the down ramp leading to Sungam-Ukkadam bypass road. Earlier, there were only three rumble strips that too at as many ending points of the flyover. We have also placed a signboard, asking motorists to limit the speed to 30kmph on the down ramp. While the earlier speed limit was 40kmph, motorists were speeding up to 60kmph-80kmph,” said a senior official with the NH wing.
On June 24, K Hariharan, 19, a native of Karur district, was killed after his motorcycle hit the parapet wall of the flyover and fell down on the service road from a height of 40ft.
Similarly, M Prasanth, 28, died on June 12 after his motorcycle hit the parapet wall of the flyover, which chief minister M K Stalin inaugurated on June 10. While the traffic police placed two barricades on the flyover curves to reduce the speed of vehicles, that didn’t help prevent another fatal accident.
Following the two incidents, the NH wing officials closed the flyover on June 25 to lay the rumble strips and carry out other works.
