HISAR: International boxer and Arjuna awardee, Saweety Boora, has filed a police complaint against her husband, Deepak Hooda, former captain of the Indian kabaddi team and fellow Arjuna awardee. She has accused him of dowry harassment and physical assault.
The complaint, lodged at Hisar women's police station, alleges that despite her family providing dowry worth Rs 1 crore and gifting a Fortuner car at the time of their marriage, Hooda subjected her to violence and demanded more dowry. The couple got married three years ago.
Police said the FIR was registered on the complaint of Saweety Boora against her husband Deepak Hooda and sister-in-law Poonam. According to police, Hooda was summoned for investigation following Boora's complaint but failed to appear, leading to the formal filing of the FIR. Boora has also filed a divorce case in court.
The case has brought attention to the deep-rooted issue of dowry abuse in India, even among the country’s most accomplished athletes and financially independent women.
