Scooterist held for riding in wrong direction, blocking traffic in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: A scooterist who decided to rewrite rules of the road by riding in the opposite direction and turning a deaf ear to requests to give way for traffic has been booked by police.
Despite being recorded by a car driver who had the right of way, the scooterist refused to budge. The video racked up a million views as netizens slammed the scooterist for his brazen disobedience of rules. A netizen dug the yellow-coloured scooter's history and pointed out that its insurance hasn't been renewed for the last six years.
On Wednesday, Halasur Gate traffic police identified the scooterist and booked him for charges of riding his two-wheeler in the wrong direction and obstructing traffic.
The incident took place on April 4 on JC Road. A police officer said: "We asked him why he entered the wrong lane. He said he was in a hurry since a close relative was in hospital. But we doubt it. We also asked him why he did not turn around and ride in the correct direction, to which he replied that since vehicles began coming from the opposite direction (facing him), he could not turn around. We have booked him under BNS Section 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and referred the matter to court," said a senior traffic police officer. "The court will fine him and close the case," he added.
Netizens were glad about the prompt action and curious about the case outcome. "How much will he be penalised? A small slap on the wrist is not going to change the attitude of such people. The sheer audacity and nonchalance with which he stood there deserves a hefty fine and confiscation of his licence for at least a few months," said a netizen.
