Gandhinagar: Information provided by the Union govt in the Rajya Sabha states that over the past three years, more than one narcotics-related case was registered on average in Gujarat every day.
Data provided by the Union govt in response to a question by RS MP and state Congress president Shaktisinh Gohil indicated that, according to cases reported by various drug law enforcement agencies (DLEAs) to the NCB (Narcotics Control Bureau), 516, 604, and 623 cases were reported to the NCB in 2022, 2023, and 2024, respectively. In the first month of the ongoing calendar year, 79 narcotics cases from Gujarat were reported to the NCB.
Providing information, the Union govt stated that 2,555 persons were arrested in narcotics-related cases in 2022, 2023, and 2024. In Jan this year, 101 people were arrested in such cases.
Commenting on the steps being taken to curb the drug menace, the Union govt mentioned that the NCB is working closely with law enforcement agencies, such as the police and customs, to share intelligence and conduct joint operations. A Multi-Agency Maritime Security Group (MAMSG) was also created in Nov 2021 to ensure better coordination between law enforcement agencies. The govt added that regular checks are conducted by port authorities to ensure that all goods, including containers, are properly inspected and cleared before being released.
